I saw Performance at least three times theatrically. After not seeing it for quite a while, I saw it on IFC. I was irked that the film has been trimmed, and that a very quick shot that indicated that Mick Jagger and James Fox were in bed together was removed. Great soundtrack by the way. I forgot to mention in my blog on Girls! Girls! Girls! that Jack Nietzche is seen backing Elvis on piano.

Peter: I was fortunate to have been there when Performance was frequently revived in theatres during the '70s.

I never saw it on IFC -- was it letterboxed? It may have been the same cut version that Warners used for their VHS edition.

As far as I can tell, the one shown on Cinemax in the mid-'80s was the original theatrical version, which I still watch even though it's not letterboxed.

Warners has yet to issue it on DVD, and I'll bet that they'll deny the film the proper presentation it deserves. I'd surely put Donald Cammell: The Ultimate Performance among the bonus features, and I think that a running audio commentary between Jagger, Roeg, Fox and Pallenberg would be fascinating.

I can't remember if IFC's version of Performance was letterboxed. It was shown with the Cammell documentary. Speaking of Cammell, I have the alledged director's cut of Wild Side in my nicheflix queue.

I always wanted to see this; didn't even realize it was on DVD. Pallenberg was one smokin' hot babe and a fascinating woman too. Did you ever read Up and Down With the Rolling Stones? Tony Whatshisface paints Anita as pure evil, but I totally didn't buy it.

Sadly...ever so sadly, it's not on DVD.

Oh great Flickhead - it's too much that you posted the soundtrack for this amazing film, here! Thank you thank you.

I have the Warner Brothers 1997 PAL VHS release, which is letterboxed but cut, as I've only just discovered. Interestingly, though, the BBFC recently (19/02/2004) passed an uncut version weighing in at 105m 27s, with the rights now being held by the British Film Institute. This - I shakely hesitate to put forward - could mean something very exciting indeed.

Two other memorable lines (I haven't got the screenplay handy), one about "There's no blower up here" (circular hand movement on the side of the head), and Pherber to Lucy, "You can't do that, honey, it's all holes!"

    He's stuck! STUCK!

    Damn...I LOVE that movie!

Aa, you forgot to say "...why?"! You said it in your head, though, I know 8^)

Most memorable for me (apart from probably, "I am a bullet") is the sequence where the chauffeur is tied down in front of his car and has his head shaved with a cut-throat by two of Harry Flowers' men. It would be effective enough on it's own but the full indignity isn't felt until shots of what the acid has done to the paint surface of the car mix with close-ups of a drooping, mostly-shaven, soapy head.

It's an astounding piece of film making.

    Perhaps we should start petitioning...
