Le charme discret de la bourgeoisie

  • Last night’s David Letterman Show offered the soon-to-be-notorious Joaquin Phoenix ‘interview.’ He’s promoting, if you will, Two Lovers (2009), a film coming out theatrically this Friday even though it’s been available on Comcast cable TV for the last month — a new and innovative approach to distribution that sails beyond my comprehension. Joaquin also mumbled something about a career in hip hop. He projected a faux hipster fog, the kind afforded by wealth and privilege. To these eyes, it was a transparent and smug performance, one I’m sure Joaquin believed wholeheartedly.

The maniacal laugh moment keeps getting funnier every time I watch it.

He's a douche, but celebs are so boring nowadays, I'll take an attempt at going entertainingly crazy over nothing at all.

I believe the whole "Joaquin stops acting, grows beard, has breakdown and becomes a hip hop star" is a sort of joke/performance art (ala Borat) that he and his brother-in-law Casey Afflick (actor/would-be filmmaker) are perpetuating on the public and media. I find it all rather funny. Here's a link to an MTV article about it and another, but a Google search should bring up a lot more.

Ironically, YouTube has removed this video. Stop violating copyright, Flickhead.

    Heh.

I found this interview compelling because it seems like Joaquin wants it both ways. He wants to mask his face and hide, but also he needs to promote a movie and possibly his hiphop career? I wonder what kind of issues he's developed about showing himself to the media.

Ed, since he has immunity from pesky copyright laws, perhaps Mr. Lee can post it on his blog!
